Maternity Clothes

No -- the title of this post is not my cute little way of announcing that I'm pregnant. That being said, the fact that I'm not growing a tiny little one in my belly is news to some people.

Back in July I blogged about this dress from Target, mentioning that I had also purchased it in black swiss dot. I purchased a third edition of the dress months later because it was a pretty dang good deal, comfy, cute, not too terribly low cut ... and I can't be stopped. I decided to wear the dress along with a ruffly cropped 3/4-sleeve cardigan on a super busy Saturday in September when I was attending both Alyssa's bridal shower in Bakersfield in the morning and a surprise 40th birthday party for my sister in law that evening.

Here's the dress adapted for November with a shawl cardigan + tights + boots:

Dress: Target
Shawl Cardigan: Target
Tights: Old Navy
Boots:  Random shoe store in Paris, purchased on our honeymoon
Key Necklace: Tiffany's
Before we sat down for dinner at the surprise party John and I were mingling with random guests. At one point I was left alone with this random couple while John was called away to be in a photo.

Out of nowhere the woman touches my tummy and asks, "Is it your first?"

I was mortified; I felt like I was having this out of body experience. Who was this stranger touching me?! What. The. Hell. I couldn't get any words out of my mouth other than a simple "No."

Rather than apologize or show any sign at all that she was embarrassed, the woman just changed the subject and acted like she didn't just ask if I was pregnant (with my first, or maybe my second? or third child?) while feeling up my imaginary baby bump.

Although I know this sort of thing has happened to many girls (and it happened to me previously when I was wearing a baby doll style shirt and a neighbor asked me if I was "going to give her some grandchildren"), the incident really affected me at the time. I think the fact that I had had such a long day, didn't get that much sleep the night before, combined with the fact that parties sometimes give me a bit of social anxiety made the whole experience that much more worse. I just wanted to go home right then and there. I nearly started tearing up at the table and John had to take me to the bathroom so I could cry a little bit.

I just felt so stupid. Every time I thought about that woman touching me I felt so dumb all over again.

Why hadn't I busted out with some sort of a snappy comeback?

Nope. I had nothing.

Maybe the outfit needed a belt? Hmmm.

Or maybe I should have laughed it off and said, "I'm not pregnant, crazyface! Are you? Can I touch your belly now?"

Story No. 2 took place at the grocery store last Sunday.

Plaid Shirt: Target (from the men's section, borrowed from John)
Jean Leggings: Gap
Flats: Urban Outfitters
Headband:  Target

So, it happened again. This stranger called me pregnant. Only this time I wasn't sad or all that mad. I felt kind of bad for the lady. But not bad enough to tell her it was OK.

After grocery shopping I was waiting by the car while John returned our cart. While waiting, this lady loading groceries into her car looks in my direction and says, "When are you due?"

What. No. It's not happening again.

I pretend not to hear her and say, "What?"

The lady repeats herself and then adds, "Are you pregnant?"

Again, I was totally at a loss for words other than a simple, "No."

The lady starts rambling:

"I was going to say congratulations ...
"I mean, you don't look fat ... I'm sorry ....
"How do you come out of this?" the lady continues, talking to herself. "You don't," she answers herself, sorrowfully.

I say "Mmm Hmm" and wonder what the heck is taking John so long.

After John finally returns to the car and unlocks the door for me, I urge him to hurry up and drive away and "DON'T look at that lady!"

When I tell him the story, he's pissed. I didn't really care though. I kind of love how that lady explained herself over and over again. At least she had the decency to act embarrassed and say sorry. It was actually quite amusing. And nothing can beat the first lady touching my "bump."

Whatever! If everyone thinks I'm pregnant I'm going to be comfy and wear what I like. I still love this shirt! So there! (I wore this outfit to work on Wednesday.)

I think Brian Regan said it best with his joke about pregnant (or not so pregnant) women:

"I met this woman recently and I could have sworn she was pregnant.
I think the rule is don’t guess at that ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever."

For reals.  Never, ever.

On the bright side, apparently I already have a few items of maternity clothing in my closet waiting for me when I do become knocked up one day!

Have you ever been asked if you were pregnant, when you weren't? How did you respond?

I've never had it happen personally, but people do comment on my weight occasionally ("You're too pretty to stay fat!" is my fave) and I just thing it's such a horrible thing.

I think both outfits are adorable and would wear them both. I'm sorry you had such a crappy experience!

Hm. Distracting from my homework again, I see.
I thought this post was going to be about Target maternity clothes, and how you were wearing some, so someone thought you were pregnant. I wear Target maternity clothes all the time-- they are so stinking cute, and because I have a long torso, where the baby would go is extra material! Plus, I can wear an XS. Bonus!
No one has ever thought I was pregnant (unless you carry a baby bump in your butt, which people DO see fit to comment on all the time), but people ask me all the time when I'm going to have kids. Like they're just really impatient and I'm inconveniencing them for not making use of my ovaries.
I know I haven't seen you for a few months in person, but I think you look adorable in your pictures. As always. THe best fashion sense on the planet!

Oh my gosh! People are crazy!!

I ALWAYS think that someone is going to think I'm pregnant. After we got married and I started working I've definitely gained a shit-ton of weight. So anytime I go down to visit people in Bako, I'm always afraid someone is going to think I'm pregnant just because we we're fairly newly married (though not really so much anymore), but you know what I mean! I feel like I'm going to be accused of sporting a baby bump and have Perez Hilton draw some stick figure fetus on my belly or something. lol!

Oh well at least WE'RE not the ones making the mean assumptions about people!

Well, I didn't have quite the same thing happen, but I did have something similar. There was this former co-worker, who was rather annoying to work with I might add, who I ran into about 1 month after I had Keegan. It was the first time Brandon and I had been on a date together since Keegan's birth and it was our anniversary. I spent a good deal of time fixing up, and thought for just being one month out from giving birth, I looked pretty decent. Not my greatest, but not horrid either. So, we're wandering in Riverpark, and we run into this former co-worker and her boyfriend and she says, "Oh my gosh! Natali, is that you? I almost didn't recognize you..." and she trailed off. I could tell she thought I looked fatter or whatever- so I said, "oh well I just had a baby last month" and she replied "oh, THAT explains it, I was going to say, wow, you've really packed on the pounds and you look kind of tired". Gee. Thanks lady. I appreciate that.

People suck sometimes.

WELL, I for one think you look very cute and NOT PREGNANT in either of those outfits!!!

i adore both outfits and seriously you look adorable and about as unpregnant as one unpregnant person can look, haha. and really i have no idea why people would assume that, that guy's quote is spot on, never assume, ever.

I truly cannot see how anyone thought you were pregnant in either outfit. honestly. People are weird but at least that second lady tried to apologize. The first lady should have said something, The nerve.

Your adorable.

They are crazy.

Wow that is so nuts! That is like, normal looking clothing and you don't even look pregnant whatsoever! And those types of clothes are the style right now, you'd think people would realize that??? It's not like they even make you look like you have a big belly. I can't believe random people would even say that to you...maybe if you were buying baby stuff or something. DUMB.

I like the Brian Regan reference :)

What. The. Hell, man!

People are so dumb. You look adorable and now I'm totally coveting a men's flannel to wear with leggings and flat boots.

WTF, I would've slapped her silly. Really I would have said, "No, I'm not and I think you shouldn't be asking this question at all!!" OR I would've just said No but with an attitude and mean face. Seriously, I have NEVER asked someone that question before. I mean, I believe it's none of my business and it's personal to them so why should they be telling me about how they're pregnant, yadda yadda.

I think you look fabulous in all of those outfits and DO NOT EVEN LOOK PREGNANT AT ALL!

If it makes you feel any better, I'm a size 2 and was recently asked if I'm pregnant. Seriously. What is wrong with these people? My coworker saw me as I was walking to the bathroom in our office. Gasped and pointed at my tummy. "IS THERE A BABY IN THERE??!!" I was mortified. I was speechless... but eventually squeaked out a firm "NO." She felt so dumb and rambled on about how I'm not fat and how she just thought since I recently got married, blah blah blah. Later she came to my office and apologized.

The moral of the story is: Never try to guess if someone is pregnant. You have nothing to gain! Do these people think there's a prize for people who can spot the mysterious baby bump? Man! So dumb.

And for the record, you look adorable and not at all knocked up.

I saw your post on Girls Gone Child and came over to check out your style.

Ohmigosh.I totally relate. This has happened to me a couple times. So embarrassing and almost always when I'm wearing something that's cut off under my boobs. I'm so paranoid now.

People are so rude!

You are ADORABLE and not even close to pregnant looking. LOVE your style. Kiss.

People are so clueless, especially because you don't even look pregnant. Love the outfits! Next time you should just say "yes, I was actually due 6 weeks ago--she just doesn't want to come out." See how they react then.

I have no idea how I missed this blog post but seriously people are ridiculous. I can't believe people think they have any right to touch other people's stomachs (pregnant or not) and really you should never make assumptions about someone being pregnant, it is dangerous territory. by no means look pregnant, some people are so dumb. Sorry you had to go through that. I had it happen once years before I got pregnant and was coincidentally trying so it really stung but I remember just being embarassed that someone would think I was pregnant. Whatever you are too cute and I love your style!
